Our Passion for Nature Drives Our Purpose
Our team are mostly from the local communities in the areas surrounding the reserve, and our training program has introduced an entirely new skill set in a region of communities that were previously limited to predominantly farming-based local work opportunities. We deeply appreciate the passion and dedication that our team brings to the lodge, the land and the projects on a daily basis. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
Our History
Kishindo is an ecotourism and conservation brand with a history of over 25 years dedicated to wildlife and environmental preservation. Our purpose is to ensure the protection of vulnerable species for future generations.
Co-owned and operated by Rodney and Lorna Drew, the Kishindo reserve is home to three generations of nature custodians with a deep passion for wildlife and the natural world. Family values underpin everything we do at Kishindo.
The original Game reserve, Tiger Canyons, was created by John Varty a passionate tiger conservationist and Filmmaker. JV has now returned to his home, Londolozi Game Reserve, where he continues his work in wildlife conservation.

Our Guides and Future Guides

The Support Staff
Meet Our Guides
Kishindo Private Game Reserve is fortunate to have a team of knowledgeable and experienced field guides who are deeply connected to the wilderness. These guides, many of whom call the reserve home, possess a wealth of insight into the local ecosystem. Their daily immersion in the natural world allows them to not only spot and identify fascinating animals, birds and plants but also to share their expertise on the reserve’s geology, history, and the intricate relationships between its various components. With their passion for conservation and their ability to explain complex ecological concepts in a relatable manner, these guides provide guests with unforgettable experiences that foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Community Matters Most!
We believe children, families, and the communities surrounding Kishindo are vital to our purpose. By supporting their success and development, will continually uplift the Philippolis community and future generations will benefit from sustainable conservation.
Our partner for community development is RADA, who supply local schools and soup kitchens with food donations. Together we also provide young girls with re-useable personal hygiene supplies.
Kishindo in partnership with the Hantam Community Education Trust provides training for students in the hospitality industry.

A Unique Vision, A Brighter Future
Kishindo, nestled in the heart of South Africa’s Free State, offers a unique and diverse landscape unlike any other game reserve in the country. From vast grasslands and rocky outcrops to river systems, wetlands, and the mighty Orange River, our reserve provides a haven for wildlife and a captivating experience for visitors.
Our vision for the future includes expanding Kishindo onto surrounding farms and developing a second lodge to further boost our conservation efforts and income. We also aim to establish a global tiger metapopulation project, working collaboratively with experts worldwide to ensure the long-term survival of this iconic species.
